He
is an acclaimed Islamic and interfaith scholar. His articles appear in
leading national newspapers / magazines and he participates in panel
discussions on various TV channels. Supported with his in-depth study of
different religious scriptures he has spoken at umpteen national and
international interfaith conferences held in India and abroad.
He established God's Grace Foundation (interfaith and education - Delhi), Zakat Foundation of India (charity - Delhi, God's Grace School (Delhi), Crescent Public Inter College, Bahraich-UP, Happy Home India (orphanage - Delhi) and Mercy Home India (charitable medical centre - Delhi) and is heading these organizations / institutions as founder President / Chairman / Director General. Having worked, for three decades, as senior member of Indian civil service, Dr Mahmood functioned as Officer on Special Duty appointed by the Prime Minister for his High Level Committee on Indian Muslims, 2005-07 and was instrumental in producing the landmark Sachar Committee Report as OSD, Prime Minister's High Level Committee for preparation of report on social, economic and educational status of the Muslim community of India.
Earlier, as Indian Consul (Haj) and Director of Indian
International Schools in Saudi Arabia he streamlined and computerized the
entire Indian Haj Management, pioneered the now well-known Annual Indian Haj
Plan and established / constructed new Indian schools in six cities of the
Kingdom. As Administrator, Punjab Wakf Board Dr Mahmood modernized the
educational syllabii in 500 madarsas in 36 districts spanning Punjab,
Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh and rationalized the salary
structure of 500 Imams. During his ten-year vibrant tenure as
Trustee-cum-Deputy Director General, India Islamic Cultural Centre, New
Delhi Dr Mahmood constructed the IICC building and organized dozens of
successful programs aiming at boosting interfaith bonhomie.
